Look and Play like a Poker Pro
by Chris Bibey
No matter who you are, if you play poker you were a beginner at one time. Chances are that you have grown out of the beginner stage and are now competing at a much higher level. But think back to the way things were when you first started playing. Were you a bit immature? Were there some things that you would have done differently?
When it comes down to it, you will want to look and play like a poker pro no matter how experienced you are. If you show that you are new to the game your competition will prey on you from the very start. Avoiding this can go a long way in ensuring that you give yourself the best chance of success.
One of the tell tale signs of a poker beginner is that they do not control themselves while playing. In other words they let their emotions get the best of them time after time. The good thing about this problem is that it can be easily corrected. All you have to do is practice a bit of self restraint and you will never have to worry about this. Of course this is easier said than done, but you should definitely learn to control yourself if you want to take your game to the next level.
Another area that new players make the mistake in is talking about their hand. Poker players can be very friendly people. But at the same time this is not always for the right reasons. After a hand you may get to talking with another player about how you beat them. This may seem like nothing more than a friendly conversation, but the fact of the matter is that when you talk about your strategy you are giving your competition ammo to use against you down the road. When they know how you play certain hands they will have a much better chance of beating you when it comes up again. As a general rule of thumb keep your mouth shut. Sure, you can be friendly, but never give up any information that could be used against you.
Overall, if you can avoid looking like an amateur you will increase your chances of success. Remember, if you conduct yourself like a professional poker player you will be well on your way to getting there sooner rather than later.
