For people that are just starting out with the game of poker there is a lot that needs to be learned.  But with that in mind, as a beginner you should try to simplify things as much as possible.  Below are three tips that you can follow in order to make yourself a better poker player from the very start.  And the beauty about these tips is that they do not have anything to do with playing strategy or competition.  They are all things that you can do without much trouble.

   1. You need to have discipline if you want to win at poker.  The fact of the matter is that without discipline you may get off track from the start, and this will greatly hold you back.  But if you have discipline you will be able to stick to your strategy, and not give in even if the circumstances are getting rough.  The great thing about discipline is that anybody can have it; you just need to look within.

   2. Before you start to play poker, either online or at the casino, you need to become familiar with how much money you have.  By knowing your bankroll you will be able to stay out of trouble from the start.  Do not make the beginner mistake of pouring more money into a poker game because you keep losing.  If things are going bad for you, simply walk away from the table.  Remember, there is always another table or another day.  By having a bankroll that you are familiar with you will never wager more money than you can afford to lose.

   3. Practice for free.  Do you really want to jump into a poker game with seasoned players before you are ready to do so?  In order to protect yourself you will want to play some free games online, or practice with a couple friends at a real table.  No matter what you do, make sure that you have a few hands under your belt in order to ensure that you are at least comfortable with the game as well as what it takes to win.

These are three tips that you can use to get your poker career off the ground and running.  Even though these have nothing to do with strategy, they are very important if you plan on becoming a star.
